Why we love linen and you should too

Once upon a time, only the upper echelon of people in society wore clothes made from linen. Step forward 700 years and we’ve come to the realisation that linen is the perfect all day everyday fabric we have dreamed of.

I am a lover of all things linen. Linen tops. Linen bottoms. Linen dresses. Linen bedding. I’m sure you get my drift - if its made from linen its coming to live with me.

You might be wondering why I have such a deep love affair with linen. The answer to that is pretty easy really….

It’s durable

Linen is known as the worlds strongest natural fibre and far more durable than cotton. The strength of the fibre means that the fabric is very strong and very long-lasting.

While a cotton T-shirt may last you a few seasons a linen top or dress will last far longer. A linen garment will be a staple in your wardrobe for years to come.

Simply put, linen one of the most durable natural fabrics available today.

It’s easy to care for

A lot of people think that linen needs some kind of special treatment but that’s just not true. Caring for linen is as easy as putting it in the wash with cold water. No detergent necessary. Give it a shake when it comes out of the wash, place on a hanger and hang to dry. Easy peasy.

Another good thing about linen is that you don’t need to iron it. Linen doesn’t need to be ironed to look good. High-quality linen is wrinkly and those wrinkles are actually part of what makes it so beautiful. While wrinkly cotton and silk will look messy when it’s not ironed, linen will shine in all of its glory regardless of how many wrinkles it has.

It’s hypoallergenic

Linen fabric breathes and allows air to move around freely between the fabric and the skin. It releases moisture really fast avoiding sweat and the breeding grounds for microbes and bacteria. Perfect for those with eczema and other skin conditions. This is not to say it will fix your allergies, but linen is definitely a safe choice for anyone who experiences some kind of skin discomfort.

It’s perfect any time of the year

Linen is a magic fabric. Because it’s lightweight breathable and moisture-wicking people choose it for summer but…

Flax is also used to make home insulation products. How does this relate to clothes you may ask? The answer is pretty simple - flax and the linen produced from it is natural insulation capable of releasing excess humidity so, while cotton and wool might make you feel warmer at first it will also make you sweat which will make you colder in the long run. Linen will retain the heat from your body and release the Excess making you feel nice and cosy without the sweat.

It’s versatile

Whether you are dressing for a formal event, the office or aiming for a cool casual look, linen is perfect. The options for dressing linen up or down are endless.

It’s sustainable fashion

These days many of us think about the impact our purchasing choices have on the environment.

Linen is at the pinnacle of sustainable fashion because flax plants cultivation is by far more sustainable than that of cotton or any other fabric.

Flax plants are exceedingly resilient, grow in poor soil and require very little water to grow. Another brilliant part of the flax plant is that every single part of the plant is used in products from fabric to oil and varnish. It's also the plant that grows flax seed - you may know it better as linseed! The whole plant is used with absolutely no waste.

Linen surprisingly is also recyclable and biodegradable. When the time comes for your beautiful linens to leave your wardrobe you can put them out into your compost bin or worm farm where they will decompose back into the earth.

It’s comfortable

Now that you’ve read this far and you see why I love linen so much you can probably understand that one of the big things about linen is how comfortable it is. It’s lightweight, breathable, moisture-wicking and thermoregulating which makes the top of my list for comfortable clothing.

On top of all of that, linen garments are usually designed with a loose fit, making them perfect for people of all ages sizes and shapes.

Now that you know how easy to care for, beautiful to wear, long-lasting, sustainable and comfortable linen clothes are, take a look at our linen clothing collection. You should find a place that will help you love linen as much as I do.

Wishing you love, luck and laughter,
Aimee.
